Sons of Pitches 2

After I gifted this sketch to the performers I’d drawn, they reached out to ask for another drawing to use on future bills.

Without the band performing in front of me, I grabbed stills from a YouTube video of their performance, which you can watch here:

First, of course, the sketch:

The sketching stage is always fun because I can be so loose.

Then linework, where I fought to maintain the movement and energy of the sketch. Using a brush marker, allowing for some line weight variation, helped.

I then added some value with Copic alcohol markers.

The energy of the reference video still felt distant, so I chose (a bit nervously) to add some spotlights behind. This was practiced several times in a different sketchbook before I took the leap to add it to the illustration itself.

And done! I was happy to capture the likenesses of the performers. And listening to their video while drawing made for a pleasant evening; not quite as fun as sketching them live, of course.
